Entry #7. All you need to know about Hashtags!

As technology has developed over the years, many changes have occurred and altered how we look at life. We use gadgets and tools in our everyday lives that we would never have thought possible. Not only has the technology we use changed, but our vocabulary has also changed. There are many phrases and words younger people use today that weren't used before; this can occur both in real life and on the internet.

A common word that has gained popularity and been used over the past few years is "Hashtag." When you search the word on Google, the definition given is "a metadata tag that is prefaced by the hash symbol." People use hashtags to have common content fall under one search. So if someone places the hashtag #coffee under a post, for example, and you click it, all posts under it should be something related to coffee. I personally believe hashtags are great and really convenient. I've seen influencers and celebrities make their own hashtags to reach their fans who post with that hashtag, and it makes things way easier when trying to find specific content. As much as this word gained popularity through its constant usage on the internet, it has now made its way into our everyday vocabulary. People sometimes use hashtags before saying what they're thinking when feeling a particular emotion or trying to find the word to describe something. For example, if someone feels happy at the moment, they can say, "Hashtag happy!" this changes the point of view you are viewing this moment as. Changing the point of view in which you see yourself from first person to third person creates this mental image of yourself from a distance.

Even though the phrase "hashtag" is rarely used in everyday conversation in 2024, it has become a great discovery as a way to get your post on people's feeds and find specific content you are looking for.
