Entry #3. Slanted Reporting Quest

Slanted reporting is a writing technique used when reporting on events where the writer uses their own opinion to persuade the reader, making the information slightly inaccurate. This type of writing is commonly used in news articles where the writer uses their opinion to report on a particular event. I have found a news article titled, "Streaming music algorithm more likely to play male artists." The writer uses their opinion very often throughout this particular article.

As I read this article, I can see the writer makes some great points supporting their claim by providing statistics showing that most recommended artists are male. The point made throughout the article is constantly restated, and I noticed that the first sentence of the article is, "Is your algorithm feminist enough?" When starting an article like this, you are automatically trying to persuade the reader with your opinion. This article looks like an informative text, but the writer's opinions seem to make their way into the writing. As much as this article informs the readers about this event, it also convinces you that the only reason why female and nonbinary artists aren't being streamed as often is due to the algorithm these streaming platforms have created. When the writer makes a conclusion for the reader, they can't help but side with them since the writer is giving so much evidence to one opinionated conclusion.

I never realized how often slanted reports are created about serious ongoing events. After being informed as to what these articles look and sound like, I can now read an article carefully and keep in mind that some writers tend to embed their opinions under their statements.
