Entry #5. Local Story Respond

Based on both of the articles I have read through, both writers have similar statements, but they approach them differently. It is interesting to see a stance where the writer persuades the reader through emotion, whereas the other writer persuades the reader through statistics.

When reading the first article, Ducey approaches the question more emotionally. He tells the audience he is writing this piece as a dad and husband, not just an elected official. As he explains why it's important for more children to complete college, he continues to try to connect heart-to-heart with the readers. On the other hand, Madeleine provides statistics that support her statement throughout her article. There isn't much emotion put into her article; instead, she says what she needs to say and gets straight to the point. Before I read both articles, I had already agreed with the fact that it is important to follow the steps to get your degree or certificate. I believe it is important to earn a degree because it can bring you so many more opportunities. When companies see the certificates and degrees you've earned, that to them means you have the basic qualifications needed to get a position under them. As much as there are a few people who find a good-paying job without a degree or certificate, I still believe they can help you further in life. Both of my parents didn't get the chance to finish high school, so they both worked super hard to give my siblings and me the best life they could. I always ask them, if they had the chance to complete high school and go on to college, would they have? Every time I ask them, their answer is always yes; as much as their life is great, they believe they could've had an even better life if they had pursued their dream career.

Many factors go into deciding whether or not college is the right path for you, but it is very much encouraged.  If it is hard for you to decide if college is right for you, maybe a gap year or two would give you some more time to decide. With a degree, you can find more doors open up for you and more opportunities being accessible to you.
