Entry #8. Nothing But Romance

'Anyone But You'
DIR: Will Gluck
Over the years, I've grown a love for romance movies. There's something about them that fills my heart with so much joy. I never knew my favorite genre of movies until I realized I would constantly lean my interest toward romantic films or shows. I never got hooked on older romance movies, even though I should give them a chance; I have only explored the newer ones. Whenever people ask me for movie recommendations, I am more than excited to share them, so today, I'll share my top three favorite romance movies.

'20th Century Girl'
DIR: Bang Woo-ri
Starting with #4 is "Five Feet Apart." The day this movie came out, I went to see it in theaters, and it was and still is one of my favorite movies. The film follows the story of a young girl diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, causing her to spend most of her time in the hospital. She navigates her day-to-day life by following routines, and that is then challenged when she meets a young man with the same illness. The flirtation between them blooms but gets restricted since they must keep a safe distance. As their connection grows, so does their desire to break the rules and embrace each other. This movie has been a comfort for me; it is filled with comedy, romance, and drama. Following #4 is #3, "20th Century Girl". This movie includes romance, drama, sadness, and plot twists. My favorite part of this movie was the colors and how they portrayed young love. This film is about a young girl who has her eyes set on a boy for her best friend, but things get complicated when she falls in love and has to choose between love and friendship. The summary for the movie just doesn't do it justice; you just have to sit down and watch it; it's fantastic. Next, I have #2, "The Sun is Also a Star." This film is one that I have rewatched multiple times; it is also another one of my favorite movies. As a young girl tries to fight against her family's deportation in busy New York, she runs into a boy named Daniel Bae. He instantly believes it is true love and begs her to give him one day to make her fall in love with him. I love this one, mainly because it plays to the part of unrealistic love. I love movies that create unrealistic circumstances because they are the most creative; they take me out of reality and let me imagine something beautiful, even if they are unethical. This is another film that made me cry and left me sitting in awe. Last but not least is #1, "Anyone But You."

This movie is the most recent of all of the ones I've talked about, and it's my favorite out of all. After watching this movie three times in theaters and about three more at home, it has become my #1. This is, so far, the rom-com of the year for me; not just me, but multiple people around would crack up during the film while in theaters, and honestly, it is hilarious. This movie consists of a girl and a boy whose prior first date was amazing, but despite that, their attraction to each other entirely does a 180. When they unexpectedly find themselves at a wedding in Australia, they must now act like a perfect couple to keep up appearances. I highly recommend this if you are into rom-coms because it'll have you laughing and crying simultaneously.

'The Sun is Also a Star'
DIR: Ry Russo-Young

At the end of the day, movies aren't rated on their quality but more on the way they make you feel. If I have a solid connection to the movie like if the main character was going through something similar to me, or it reminds me of a particular memory, it will hold a special place in my heart. I would love for anyone reading this to watch these movies, and I would appreciate it if you could recommend some more to me, too!

  1. The sun is also a star is my favorite romance movie ! As soon as I saw it in movie theatres, I fell in love with it but I saw so many people giving it horrible reviews. It may not be the best in quality but the way it makes me feel is why I love it so much.
